This is not the “inaugural” post I had planned to write, but here it is…I am a native Texan and I am devastated and haunted by the images of the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. Of course, you have seen many of the same images of the suffering and loss from this natural disaster.
I have decided that instead of fretting and wringing my hands, I must take some kind of action and I invite you to join me! I am borrowing information from one of my favorite bloggers at http://hisugarplum.com
How We Can Help
For local Dallas readers: Tens of thousands of evacuees will begin arriving in Dallas today, with makeshift shelters at the Convention Center, schools and recreation centers. Trusted World has set up donation centers with needs specific to the shelters: diapers, baby wipes, toiletries, feminine hygiene products and nonperishable food including baby formula. The only clothing items that are needed at this time are packs of underwear and socks. Go here for location and hours.
For readers elsewhere: A super-simple way to help is through redcross.org, or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. (The system is backed-up, so it may take awhile before you receive a response.) The deduction will appear on your phone bill.
And finally, please don’t forget our vulnerable furry friends; they are family too! Animal shelters are in need of supplies and cash donations here.
Pray for Texas
Ironically, disasters bring out the best in people, and we continue to see that in national and international compassion. I look forward to posting more lighthearted and joyful blog posts, but today was the day to “go live” as we pull together to support and lift up Gulf Coast residents.
